"This provided an opportunity for everyone to think about the fact that not only figure skating but also other sports could cause such life-threatening accidents -- because everyone was worried about me, and I'm privileged in that respect too. I realized then that it is special to be the Olympic champion. I'm the only men's singles champion from the Sochi Olympics, and no matter how history changes, that will be the same forever.

"I feel that the accident which occurred at this rink is something I have to carry with me for the rest of my life. I think it can happen not only in figure skating but also in other sports. I don't have any medical expertise, but I hope to inform people about the occurrence of such accidents and the danger of concussion."

It was a tough season, but Hanyu was happy that he continued to fight.

If the doctor hadn't diagnosed that he hadn't had a concussion after the Cup of China... Or, as a result of the forced participation, if he had ended up in a position where he had to give up advancing to the Grand Prix final...

"I don't think I could have done anything while dealing with the shock," Hanyu said about those possible situations. "And my season would have finished early without success."
