At Sochi 2014, Hanyu was the only Japanese competitor to win a gold medal. Seiko Hashimoto, head of the Japanese competitor delegation to the 2014 Olympics, discussed his achievement at a press conference.

"Hanyu said he felt the real fear of the Olympics and frustration even though he won the gold medal," Hashimoto said. "It is great for an athlete of his age to feel that sort of regret. It is a valuable asset for him to feel a strong desire to win gold again in the next Olympics."

Hanyu himself talked about the earthquake and the aftermath.

"If I could do anything to support the recovery efforts then, this, winning Olympic gold, should be a starting point."

As a figure skater and a 19-year-old man, Hanyu's journey began here at Sochi 2014. By having felt frustration there as well, his success story began.

One month after the Olympics, he won the ISU World Figure Skating Championships for the first time at his third attempt.
