"It is extremely difficult for me to speak about the disaster now," Hanyu replied. "It's true that after the earthquake I could not skate and it was hard for me to carry on with my daily life, I even thought seriously about quitting skating. But many people gave me a lot of help, and now I can be here thanks to them."

At the time, Hanyu thought that his good skating results, "would not help the recovery efforts after the disaster," and felt powerless. There was also a time when he was not confident in his decision to move from Sendai to Canada.

"The result I achieved here is not only thanks to my two years in Canada but also a product of more than 10 years skating in Sendai."
