"As it went, especially the latter half, my energy was dwindling and I was feeling negative. It was hard to perform with those," Hanyu said after free skate.

His points were 178.64, and the total was 280.09. It seemed at the time that his chance of winning was diminished.

Chan who had won three consecutive the World Figure Skating Championships, however, was also caught by Olympics' demon. Given the big chance to win the gold medal, he could have felt huge pressure and made many mistakes. Chan succeeded on the first and second jumps but missed the next quadruple toe loops and triple axel with his hand on the ice. Also, he made an error on double axel in the latter part; his points were 178.10, which was not enough to overtake Hanyu's score.

"I can only say that I am astonished," Hanyu said, who just the Olympic gold medal in the individual event after his own disappointment. "Now I know the true fear of Olympics," Hanyu continued with serious manner.

It is very difficult to perform perfectly at Olympics and the key factor for win would be athletes' real power. In that sense, the reasons for his gold medal could be injury-free season, his improvements through the same stages with Chan such as Grand Prix series.
