"I was overthinking the Salchow," Hanyu said afterward. "It was like I was thinking too much about what I had to do. Even though it failed, I didn't feel too bad, so I think I should keep performing how I like."

In the short program, performing to the song "Let's Go Crazy", Hanyu was different from before, and was controlling his emotions and calmness.

"I expressed the mood I felt here," he said. "I think it was fine. But if I had completed the Salchow, I would have gone crazy. I was frustrated by the failed jump and wanted to dispel that annoyance in the free skate.

Building up to the Championships, Hanyu had plenty of time to train. He referred to the way he was "imagining broadly and thinking a lot" during that piece of training, with that performance in the short program one of the things he wanted to give a try.

As opposed to the rock-oriented music of the short program, the piano song "Hope and Legacy" for his free skate was serene. Hanyu performed emotionally to the music. The trigger for him to decide upon that song was the presence of Chen and Uno, who had already included some quadruple jumps in their programs.
