"I was desperate to win against Patrick but I also felt it was not the time," Hanyu said. "He showed great performances and recorded a huge point gap to me, and that ignited something in me. It was a good turning point for me to improve."

During his steep development, it was very worthwhile for Hanyu to compete with Chan three times in a row. And it was an opportunity he wouldn't waste.

"I got a good technical evaluation of 87.28 even though I made two big mistakes," Hanyu said. "Patrick recorded over 100 points for the first time, but if I had done better at quadruples, twice at least, maybe I would have made it to 100 points. I realised that if I do well in my performance, the points will come."

He also felt that he improved his ability to use the right words when reviewing his performances at that time as a result of talking to the media.

"I like to analyse by myself, but this kind of place (talking to the media) makes me more analytical. And there are questions from different angles and perspectives, which I appreciate every time."

This positive attitude would help lead Hanyu to glory down the line.
