At the Autumn Classic International, his first competition of the season, he successfully performed a quadruple loop in the short programme, the first time the jump had been achieved in the world. In the free skate he managed to jump the loop but missed some other jumps, which frustrated him. At the Skate Canada International, the first competition of the Grand Prix series, his quadruple loop in both the short programme and free skate were judged down a grade, leading to a loss to Patrick Chan of Canada. But the composition would be perfected at the next tournament, the NHK trophy in late November.

In the free skate, he successfully landed the first quadruple loop even though his core tilted.

"Although it happened to be tilted in the short programme as well, it's good that I performed confidently," Hanyu said. "I felt fine entering the rink because things went well in training, and I wasn't thinking about the jump and was relaxed and ease from the beginning."

In the six-minute-training before the actual performance, Hanyu was totally focused.

He successfully jumped the first triple loop, and then finely executed a three-jump sequence from a triple Axel. Although he stumbled at the next quadruple toe loop, Hanyu tried again and succeeded, following up with nice executions of a quadruple Salchow and one final quadruple loop.
