Performing the triple Axel in the opening, he went with his exhibition number from the 2010-11 season, Vertigo, in the first session. For that, he included some triple jumps, spins, and steps in the composition, which the fans applauded enthusiastically.

On top of that, Hanyu finely executed a quadruple toe loop for the finale. Finally, he came back to the rink with Javier Fernández of Spain for a jumping contest. After Fernández jumped a quadruple Salchow, Hanyu attempted a quadruple loop, the jump he had managed to complete at the exhibition of the World Team Trophy but which no-one had yet successfully performed at an official competition.

For that jump, he stumbled at the first attempt and popped to a double at the second try, smiling wryly. Still not giving up, Hanyu made a third attempt after the other skaters had left the ice, but fell again. He left the rink apologizing to the fans by putting his hands together.

In the end, he had been unable to complete "a composition including a quadruple in the latter half" so he "would attempt it next season". He even tried to jump a quadruple loop and Lutz as well as a toe loop and Salchow, explaining his reasoning eagerly.
