The biggest challenge, however, would be caused by a serious injury at the NHK trophy. After that, Hanyu overcame adversity with a strong will to win consecutive Olympics golds, but a new trend emerged at the World Figure Skating Championships after the PyeongChang Olympics, from which Hanyu was absent.

In the short programme, Chen performed a quadruple Lutz and a quadruple flip, as did Vincent Zhou from the USA, who included the Lutz and a flip. Zhou attempted six quadruple jumps of four kinds, including a Salchow, and even though he failed some he still came third in the short programme. Chen also tried six quadruple jumps of four kinds in the final run and scored 321.40 points to win the free skate. Chen showed his remarkable strength while younger skaters were also willing to compete in the tournament.

For Hanyu, this was the beginning of the fierce competition with his new rival, Chen.
