He failed a quadruple toe loop in the short program but still overtook Tatsuki Machida by 0.33 points.

"It was a bad short program but that's why my emotions exploded in the free skate," Hanyu said.

At the Championships, he felt that he was welcomed as a gold medallist.

"The sound of the cheering and people's voices ware totally different," he said. "It was like the sound Japanese men's' figure skating legends such as Daisuke Takahashi or Takeshi Honda received, and it was a bit of a strange feeling because now the cheers were being directed at me. I determined to work hard in order to make history."

In the years since Hanyu has often spoken about the role, Olympic gold medallists should play in this way.
