With that in mind, Hanyu chose Ice Rink Sendai, a venue he grew accustomed to at a young age, for a media session in August 2013, right before the season started. He selected "Romeo and Juliet" for his free skate, which he had also used in the 2010-11 season.

This also reflected his gratitude to his family, who helped him relocate to Canada, and his grandparents who always support him.

Hanyu started skating at the age of four. Looking back he confessed "I was a baseball boy, to be honest", and he played catch and hit with his father as a youngster. But when his sister started skate class, he attended as well, and soon found himself hooked.

It took 15 years for Hanyu to go from there to becoming the Olympic gold medalist. However, he was still not entirely satisfied with that result because of some mistakes caused by what he termed the 'Olympic devil'. Therefore, he swore that he would become stronger in order to overcome that devil at the next Olympics.

Although he said "it was so emotional" when he touched the gold medal, he admitted to "getting frustrated" afterward as well.
