"Mr. Pulshenko is my idol and I started to aim the Olympics because of him," Hanyu said. "When I skate on the same link with him, my legs are shaking. He is such a big figure for me. In my memory of Olympics, fantastic competitions between him and (Alexei) Yagudin were very impressive. It was like a dream that I finally skated and competed with him on the same link. It was very special and privileged."

His performance was just perfect, scoring 97.98 points that surpassed Pulshenko by 6.59 points. Chan came in third place after missing jumps. Even in comparison to those top rivals, Hanyu's performance was outstanding.

"At the first official training in Sochi, my body was so slow and I felt that this is because of the Olympics. But I kept skating and it became all the same with the other competitions. I feel good now and expect for the individual event."

Also, he was asked by a journalist, "did you see Olympic's devil?" as a typical question by a Japanese reporter. Then he replied with a smile, "probably yes. But I didn't think about that and did cordially what I had to do".
